When Mr. Rayner first opened business in Hongkong, he
96 employed a man of Austrian (or possible German) origin, -who had previously been engaged as a olerk in the Italian Consulate, later he put in a man secured from another German firm in Canton.. Both these men were rejected by the Hongkong Goverment.
As it was known Mr. Rayner was doing a good business in Canton, following up Carlowits's business, the Attorney General
and asked what position Mr. in Hongkong was recently approached Rayner held in the Colony. The reply was that as he was a British subject he could trade here provided he did not work for Carlowits. The Attorney General admitted that he might be doing so, but proof would be very difficult to obtain.
Mr. Rayner now calls his firm in Canton Raynor Heusser & Co. Mr. Heusser, who claims to be a Swise, was for- merly with Kessrs. Carlowitz & Co. in Shanghai. When Mr. Rayner
